Ч ч чы – Pronounced close to the “ch” sound in the word “exchange”:

  • чэфы́ "happy",
  • чэты́ "chicken".

Чъ

Чъ чъ чъы – Has no equivalent in English. This is a  forelingual, hard, voiceless, aspirate affricate.  When the closed vocal organs are being torn by the passing airflow, a sharp, short, snapping sound comes out:

  • чъыга́й "oak",
  • чъы1э́ "cold".

Ч1

Ч1 ч1 ч1ы – Has no equivalent in English. This is a forelingual, abruptive, sibilant afficate. To pronounce the sound, the vocal cords merge together at the beginning and then open at the end producing a noise. This sound is more tense than voiced and voiceless sibilant affricates:

  • ч1ып1э́ "place",
  • ч1ыфэ́ "debt".
