Ш

Ш ш шы – Pronounced close to the “sh” sound in the word “ship”:

  • шы "horse",
  • шыблэ́ "thunder".

Шъ

Шъ шъ шъы – Has no equivalent in English. This is a  forelingual, sibilant spirant, which is different from the voiced “жъ” by its absence of voice and more tense character. Pronounced with aspiration:

  • шъэ "hundred",
  • шъабэ́ "soft".

Шъу

Шъу шъу шъуы – Has no equivalent in English. This is a forelingual, sibilant, aspirate, labialized spirant. At the beginning, the sound is pronounced close to the “шъ” sound. At the end the lips become semi-rounded and create a crack through which the air passes.

  • шъугъуалэ́ "jealous",
  • шъукъа́к1у "come".

Ш1

Ш1 ш1 ш1ы – Has no equivalent in English. This is a forelingual,  sibilant abruptive. It is different from voiced and voiceless spirants by its additional linkage of the vocal cords, which unlink at the end of the sound bringing a special tone to it. This spirant is pronounced in a more intensive manner than  voiced and voiceless spirants.

  • ш1ын "do",
  • ш1эны́гъ "knowledge".

Ш1у

Ш1у ш1у ш1уы – Has no equivalent in English. At the beginning of the sound it is pronounced like the “ш1” sound, then the lips stretch forward and become semi-rounded creating a crack, which produces a  forelingual, sibilant, labialized sound:

  • ш1уц1э́ "black",
  • ш1уфэ́с "greetings".
